Shot boxing champion dies on lawnReko Rennie
March 10, 2009 - 2:29PM
Former Australian heavyweight champion Vince Cervi was gunned down in the driveway of his Preston house last night.
The champion boxer, 41, known as the 'Voodoo Man', was killed by a gun shot wound to his stomach.
Police have charged a 45-year-old man with the shotgun murder at a home in Melbourne's north last night.
As investigations continued at the scene of the shooting this morning, police charged a man they arrested at the Preston house.
Cervi died after he was shot at least once. Police found the man bleeding on the front lawn of the Dalgety Street house at 8pm and tried desperately to revive him before paramedics arrived. He died on the property's front lawn.
The accused was arrested at the house and taken to St Kilda Road police headquarters for questioning.
The cream weatherboard house, metres from High Street and Preston Girls Secondary College, remained cordoned off this morning, a concreting business truck in the driveway. Two detectives carried out a machine, about a metre square, several plastic bags that appeared to contain powder and a few beer bottles.
A man who arrived in a ute appeared shocked when police told him what had happened.
The man, who did not want to be identified, said he worked with Cervi, who was a concreter, but declined to comment further.
Many neighbours, some with children, said they were unwilling to talk to the media but Dalgety Street resident Mary Velanis, said the killing was "quite a shock''.
"It's usually a quiet neighbourhood,'' she said. "Of course it's a concern. It's your backyard. It's very quiet around here and nothing like this has ever happened. It does concern me.
"Everyone's got kids around here and you've got a school up there and I just hope it doesn't go on.''
Ms Velanis said she'd often seen the victim in the street and had never had any problems with him.
Another resident, Maria, who said she had lived in the street for 52 years and had never seen any trouble there, said she was in shock. She said Cervi was "a good man'', an "Italiano''.
