WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING – AT THE DOUBLE!
NEWS: The following information in red is
likely to be incorrect as news has it that the Darchinyan fight having
collapsed. (promoters have not kept YVB informed)
Melbourne boxing fans are in for a double treat on the afternoon of Sunday, November 27, with now two world titles up for grabs at Vodafone Arena.
Australia’s only current world champion, IBF flyweight king VIC ‘RAGING BULL’ DARCHINYAN, will have a mandatory defence of his crown against the IBF’s top-rated contender, Irishman DAMAEN KELLY, over 12 rounds.
This bout was originally scheduled for Sydney, but BLASTER and BLUE CORNER PROMOTIONS have successfully negotiated for the eagerly anticipated fight to be moved to Melbourne - the boxing and sports capital of Australia.
The IBF championship fight will join SHANNAN TAYLOR’s challenge to RAYMOND JOVAL for the Dutchman’s IBO middleweight championship as a double main event at Vodafone Arena (Tickets from TICKETEK. Ph: 132 849).
Darchinyan, 29, is undefeated in 24 bouts with 19 wins coming by way of knockout. The Jeff Fenech-trained superstar will be making the third defence of the title he lifted from the previously-unbeaten Colombian Irene Pacheco with a stunning 11th round TKO in Hollywood, Florida, last December.
The well-credentialled Kelly, 32, comes to Melbourne with a 21-2 win-loss record, including 10 victories by the short route. His only two losses have been to Pacheco, in Colombia, in September 2003, and a bout stopped on cuts while defending his Commonwealth flyweight title in May 1999.
For Taylor, his battle with Joval will be the biggest fight of his career since he unsuccessfully challenged the great ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley for his WBC welterweight crown at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas in March 2001.
The Bulli Blaster will attempt to dethrone Joval, a two-time IBO middleweight champ, who will be making the first defence of the belt he won in Belgium in June. The experienced Dutchman knows all about the calibre of Australian fighters – having boxed Melbourne star Sam Soliman twice for a win and a loss.
The undercard to Joval-Taylor and Darchinyan-Kelly will feature many of Melbourne’s most popular pugilists. Crowd favourite DALE WESTERMAN will defend his OPBF light-heavyweight championship in a grudge match against New South Welshman BRETT CULEY, one of only two men to defeat ‘Diamond Dale’ in the past seven years; while newly-crowned Australian light-heavyweight champion ‘TIGER’ TIM BELL and exciting light-middleweight EDDIE ‘PSYCHO’ DELIC will also be in action.
***All media are invited to attend a press conference for vision and interview opportunities at Vodafone Arena on Thursday, November 17, beginning at 1pm. VIC DARCHINYAN, SHANNAN TAYLOR, RAYMOND JOVAL AND JEFF FENECH will be in attendance.
